Project Evaluation

The final product of my project did match the original idea I had I mind. The colour scheme fitted the exact idea I had, making it relate to the latest expansion of using the colour green with a dark background to really make it stand out. The images were all related and fitted well too which also matched the original idea. The only things that didn’t match my original idea was the layout of the review and feature; they look a bit bland and basic when I did have some sort of layout planned to make it look more interesting which I ended up failing to do.

The methods I used on this project was firstly to use Photoshop to create the front cover and experiment with certain layout designs, moving things around, different images and fonts. I also used some techniques to change the colour of the backgrounds on InDesign by playing around with the layers and schemes as well as setting out images in certain orders in front and behind text.

My magazine compared to the professional magazine doesn’t look too bad however could still use a lot of work. The cover is direct and sends a clear image towards the individual like a professional magazine would. The contents page is laid out in a certain way to show where everything is clearly as well as clear advertisements to Blizzard’s other games also like a professional magazine. The review and feature however are still very basic in comparison to the professional magazines and could of done with better images and needed more planning to look better. I did try to follow a typical gaming magazine style and did pull off some things, but due to being a bit unfamiliar with the program, I was unable to create the magazine fully to the image.

The main pursuit of the magazine was to celebrate World of Warcraft’s 12th anniversary of being live as a somewhat special type of magazine in a form of entertainment. I do believe I achieve this by adding content in the magazine that any WoW player can relate and enjoy while being informative and detailed.

I do think that I have gained more confidence in using Photoshop in the terms of editing colour schemes and the basics. I am also now a bit more familiar with InDesign due to starting with this project with the faintest memory of how to use it.

If I could change anything about this project it would be the layout of the review and feature as to me, it looks too basic and simple. I think I could have improved the quality of the magazine as a whole however by simply taking more time to plan and practise using the program that I was unfamiliar with.

The sources of information I gained for this project was firstly YouTube to gain some basic knowledge on how to use InDesign. I watched a few tutorials and followed some online guides to show me what steps I needed to take to get the default basic layout of any magazine and how to customize it to fit my certain style. I also gained information about what to write in my feature by looking at websites with the history of the game with accurate dates to use. I also did a poll to gain information about the type of people in my social group that use magazines in their lives which helped me gain an idea of my target audience, especially when I looked into the demographics of my chosen topic.

My time management for my pre-production went well. It was all on time and followed the schedule that we set for ourselves on time to a high quality. The production stage was a bit slow due to not knowing really how to correctly and promptly use InDesign however was created in time. The post-production however fell behind slightly due to lack of access to software to reflect and quote previous work as well as being a bit behind on the production stage held me back a bit near the end.

The design I was going for was a magazine that when you saw it, you would immediately know that it was about World of Warcraft.It was created in a way that could reflect on its latest expansion as well as show informative and create articles inside that any sort of WoW player would enjoy which I felt, content wise, I met the goal. Again, I do think that the actual design and layout of my project could of been improved and met a higher standard however due to not knowing the software too well this was limited.

I believe that my magazine is going to be appropriate for my targeted audience due to it being created specifically for them as a special edition release. It has everything that a WoW player would look for as well as making it special to celebrate it’s 12 year anniversary. The only complaint I can think of to make this more enjoyable for my targeted audience is to make it slightly more interactive so they feel that they are more a part of the celebration.

Weekly Evaluation

Week 1

Our first task for this project was to research front covers of magazines. This was to get an idea of what kind of design we want to have when we create our own as well as the techniques used on the more popular magazines. We also looked at contents pages and looked how they can be designed differently but still get their clear message across. We did this in a couple of ways from looking at online magazines to going down to a local WHSmiths to read and evaluate the physical kind. By doing this, I have more of an idea of how to create a clear but genre related cover page and contents. This also helped me decide on what kind of magazine I want to create.

Week 2

This week we continued with our research and had to analysis all of our choices so we can be certain on what to create. We did this by creating SWOT analysis charts as well as getting a range of ideas and presenting them. This helped me see what I think I would find manageable in the time limit given as well as something I felt that I could strongly and confidently produce. We also had to write a conclusion/finalization to talk about our ideas and what one we would be picking and why. I chose to do a gaming magazine as it is a strong subject for me as well as taking the opportunity to create a magazine about one of my favourite games, who’s anniversary is coming up by the deadline.

Week 3

During this week of work, I looked more into the style of gaming magazines and what kind of covers, contents pages and language of articles they are speaking in. This helped me develop an idea of how I should talk within my magazine as if I was talking to the reader, not just some text for someone to read. I looked at some demographics of the game I would be dedicating this magazine to so I had an idea of who my targeted audience was as well as plan out what my cover and contents pages would look like by drawing up a flat plan. This really helped me as I could vision it within the flat plan and helped me know what the person of the certain demographic would look for.

Week 4

This week I continued with my research and started to gain an idea of what the whole magazine would contain. I started to write down my review and feature stuff to get a bit of a idea of what to write and how to write it. I feel that I am on time at the moment and will have enough content to fill the magazine. I also created a presentation to pitch to my tutor.

Week 5

This week, all research had to be completed and deliver our pitches. I completed all my research on time as well as produced the pitch on time. However due to illness I wasn’t able to deliver my pitch in person but sent it to my tutor who read it and approved of the work I completed. With this, I started to remind myself on how to work on InDesign as I haven’t worked with that program in a while. I was very glad that I did this as I could not remember much from that program as it has been so long since the last time I used it.

Week 6

This week, I started to work on my front cover and experiment on Photoshop with different ideas and designs while still keeping to the same layout that I had on my flat plan. I decided to go for a black and green theme to relate to the latest expansion of the World of Warcraft game Legion which is starting to look really good. I am glad that I went with these colours as it has had positive feedback from peers and tutors and it stands out well. The only flaw I have so far with this concept is that putting additional text on it appears to be some what challenging as it can be hard to read.

Week 7

This week, I continued with my front cover. After a few edits and opinions I managed to make it look decent enough to present. After my cover, I opened up InDesign to lay out the rest of my magazine with the page numbers, article columns and picture boxes. After this, I started to design my contents page and page three which was created for advertisements of the same game company, just with their other content. I feel this went well especially as I still feel a bit rusty with InDesign, however I am happy with the progression that I am currently making.

Week 8

This week, I continued to work in InDesign for my magazine. Some things didn’t save from the last time I was on there so I had to redo some things as well as improve my cover by rearranging things such as the bar code which was on the bottom left and is now in the bottom middle. After this, I added a final advertisement to the back of my magazine to cover that section up leaving just the review and feature sections left. Before this weeks work ended, I managed to put up about half of my review onto my magazine. I am once again happy with my progression on this project and feel that I am making good time, even after missing some days due to being sick

Week 9

This week, I continued with my review and feature. I seemed to have hit a writers block very early on and couldn’t put my final thoughts into words but I did eventually this week complete the review section with the images. I started m feature and got about half way through before ending the week. I feel that I am a bit behind now but will keep continuing to complete this project before the deadline. Even though the timing is now getting a bit tight and close, it isn’t effecting me too much and the quality of my work is staying the same.

Week 10

This week, I completed my feature in my magazine causing the whole magazine to be completed. After getting some positive feedback from peers and tutors, I exported it and uploaded it to WordPress. I completed most of the post production work as well, however there are still a couple of bits that I need to complete and hand in however the actual project is completed. I feel I did the project well and managed my time decently, even though I fell a bit behind at the last minute.I am happy with the design of my magazine as well as the content written in it. If I could change anything about it, it would be to have included a video inside it as well as spend a little bit more time finding better pictures for the articles, but I am still happy with the final result.
